  • Death before Birth?

    i have a bit of a puzzle...
Michael Willis's birth was registered second quarter of 1962 ( manchester), but his death is registered the first quarter of 1962 ( preston, which could come under manchester i suppose its all the same area).
is this possible that the mother only got round to registering the birth after the death? he is down as dying age 0 so either at birth or under 1 year old.

A week to register a death, six weeks to register a birth, so not impossible that the birth appears to be recorded AFTER the death.

Preston is nothing to do with Manchester, but of course he could have been born in one place and died in another.

Hi Tom, yes i have checked thoroughly right through a 2 year period even though i know he was born in 1962, also a blanket search of the surname, but this was the only birth and death od the same name.

I do know for his sibling the mother didnt register the birth until she had been chased up and reminded, and the birth is registered in the quarter after the quarter she was born.
or to be more precise, she was born in the august and registered in november.

Hi OC, i thought i had seen preston sometimes come under manchester.. i know preston is in Lancs, but with all the border changes and swaps around the Cheshire/ lancs/ merseyside and greater manchester area i just assumed it could be possible.
I know now that Preston is quite large and would be self contained ( i had to go there a couple of weeks ago and got completely lost iits grown out of all recognition to me).
The mother did flit around abit in the local area, Preston, Oldham, Shaw, Blackpool..etc.

Why don't you phone the local RO? I find the Lancashire ones to be extremely helpful over the phone! (Or even by email).

(Sorry, I meant Preston and Manchester are, and always have been two separate registration areas.)

It is perfectly possible for the birth to be registered in the quarter after the death. The death had to be registered within a few days but you have 6 weeks to register a birth.

The death may well have been registered by somebody (not the baby's parents) who was present at the death but not at the birth, in which case they would have to leave the birth registration for one of the parents to sort out at a later date. Which could of course have been in the next quarter.

There are certainly cases of this happening which have been mentioned on this site before.

Father registered the death, assuming birth was already registered, found out later the birth had not been registered, went back with the mother later.

Vikki, if he was illegitimate then the father would not have been allowed to register the birth unless the mother was there as well.

So it might be that she wasn't feeling up to going to the register office at the time the death had to be registered, and that was why they had to go back and register the birth later, rather than the father assuming that the birth had already been registered.

That was the story I was told, but you could be right, the baby was born at 24 weeks, and only lived for an hour, poor little mite, today it would have had a fighting chance.

Manchester has better Childrens Hospital facilities. If the baby was prem or seriously ill, chances are he would have been transferred there.

A guy I used to work with son was born with serious kidney problems. He died at 11 months, but was treated a lot in Manchester. That was in the late 1990s
Where we live is 70-odd miles further away from Manchester than Preston, but is still the 'local' children's specialist hospital!
