  • Help with...death after labour....Please

    Hi all,

Have a death, cert states..........death was due to severe vomiting five days after labour.

because it did'nt say "after birth" I'm now thinking it must of been a stillborn.

This was in 1932 Scotland, have looked for the birth but can't see it.

    Regards

you think labour as in childbirth rather than as in 'worked hard'

      Jess,

      It says:

Labour with severe vomiting, vomiting continued after labour shock and (looks like) sepsis, five days.

      So i thought childbirth.

      What do you think.

sounds like pre-eclampsia to me.. thats what it would be called today probably

If the child was stillborn then it wouldnt be in the normal register

Yes, childbirth and not necessarily a full term pregnancy either.

The sepsis is usually caused by poor hygiene on someone's part during labour, or could be caused if the foetus had been dead for a while inside the womb.

I thought childbed fever was the same thing, Julie.

Puerperal fever (childbed fever) is a separate and different thing, with the same result!

Because sepsis is mentioned on the death cert, she died of that, and it could either have been the result of puerperal fever OR of something else.

Example - she might have cut herself, say and developed sepsis, causing an early labour,or a stillbirth, which isn't the same thing as puerperal fever,(which develops AFTER childbirth) but has the same result.

Thanks for the correction OC, I had always understood they were the same. Got it now. Just goes to show what a risky business it is to produce the next generation and keep the human race going - I think we should get danger money!

I agree Nell - it's a miracle that any of us are here, given the historic hazards of childbirth.

Can you imagine living in some outlandish cottage and needing a caesarian in 1650??? I suppose you would have just laboured till you died.

Bad enough imagining it without any pain relief, OC!

                        Thank's all,

Poor thing she was 19 years old.

I think all of these mothers that died or survived childbirth back then should have some sort of memorial .

I bet more young women died then than men did in war!

                        Regards

Golly yes. I have several female ancestors who had umpteen kids and then suffered pregnancy/childbirth related deaths in their late 30s/early 40s, leaving several young ones.

The exception was my gt grandmother who was pregnant 9 times, had 6 livebirths and raised 3 children. She died at the age of 83.
