  • Am I taking a leap too far

Takes a bit of explaining so hope you stick with me.

My 3 x great grandfather is Charles Henry Fenton c1836 Newport, Bucks, actor and comedian.
His father Henry John Fenton born c1808 Barnard Castle Durham, Actor and Comedian, who was married to Eliza Jackman.
These are quite easy to trace on census as children are born all over the place so they stand out.

A matching baptism for Henry John Fenton on IGI gives possible parents of James Fenton and Caroline Godwin.

TODAY, I received a death cert I had ordered for a Henry John G Fenton, died 1879 Radford Notts.
It's definitely the right man as it's the same address as the family are at in 1871 and his occupation is "former actor" and wife is the informant.

Only now he has suddenly become Henry John Gill Fenton

With a quick google I find Gill is a middle name used for another set of theatrical Fentons

father - James Gill Fenton, prompter and stage manager
    children:
    Caroline Gill Fenton c1819
Frederick Gill Fenton c1820, scenic artist
Charles Gill Fenton c1822, actor and scene painter
    Charlotte Gill Fenton c1825

James Gill Fenton was born at Thame in Oxfordshire c1794 - but I can't find anything to show who his parents may be.

I suspect James Gill Fenton and Henry John Gill Fenton could be brothers - I'm not put off by the distance in their birthplaces as in all my theatrical families they tend to give birth wherever they happen to have a job at the time.

They both have a son called Charles and a daughter called Caroline - which isn't really that common an name at the time.

I've had a go on the IGI and FamilyHistoryOnline and ancestry but I'm stumped.

Am I clutching at straws a bit?

    Sorry for waffling

    Z

yep - that's where I got the 2nd lot of Fentons from. I've found them on census and confirmed the ages and relationships

I was aware of them before as I spent a whole day at the Theatre Museum chasing that Charles Fenton thinking he was mine before I realised he died too early

I'm just worried that in the back of my head I want them to be connected because I'd found him before.

I think it would be the most astonishiong coincidence if the two families were NOT connected.

hmmmmm - that's what I was hoping someone would say

Now I just need to figure out how to connect them when they don't stay in any one place for much longer than 6 weeks and I have no idea where to start looking for a marriage between James and Caroline - the possible parents of my Henry John

I was going to offer to take a photograph of where he died Zoe but Queen St Radford doesn't seem to exist any longer.

                    *graciously accepts spanner*

Where was he buried? It might help me find his missus.

Chrissie - thank you. I think it changed it's name between his death and the next census as they are at a different address but it appears in teh same place on the census i.e. the street before it is the same

I'll get the references so people can see what I mean

                      1871 Census - RG10; Piece: 3504; Folio: 36; Page: 32

street before their entry is Thorsley Street and the family is called Sills. They are the first entry on Queen Street

                      1881 census - RG11; Piece: 3346; Folio: 36; Page: 31

Street before their entry is still Thorsley Street with the Sills family still there but they are now the first entry for Pennyfoot Street

Street could be Thorsby Street - hard to tell between the two

                          wife was Eliza born 1808

She appears on the 1881 census in Sneinton with her daughters but I can't find her after that. Although I must admit it's a while since I checked FreeBMD for possible deaths

hmmmmmm - there's a possible in Nottingham in 1895, aged 85 - but that means she should be on 1891 somewhere
