  • 1891 - I know he's there somewhere

    Having a spot of bother.

Got a death certificate today to confirm which one of two possibles was my 3 x great grandfather Charles Gloster.

All hunkydory and I got the right one Charles Gloster aged 81 formerly Coach Plater of the parish of St Pauls Covent Garden. he died in the Strand Union Workhouse. died 7th May 1900.

Here's my confusion..... you lot helped me decide which one to order by working out some bits from the 1891 census where there's a similar entry for a Charles Gloster born in London - but now I can't find my Charles Gloster in 1891.

    I know I'm going bonkers

He's very unsure of his birthplace and varies between Handsworth in Staffordshire, Birmingham, Walsall and Yorkshire!!
everything points to it actually being Handsworth but who knows where he was saying it was in 1891.

his wife is Jane born c1825 in Walsall.

    Help, please.

Yours in a quivering curled up ball

    Zoe

    xx

RG12; Piece: 124; Folio 137; Page 35 has a Charles W Coster which has been corrected to Gloster, says he's born Walsall, Staffs, but his wife is Alice.

        Sorry Zoe.

I tried Charles Glo* and just Charles with wife Jane and then Jane no surname born Walsall. Zilch. Da nada.

He might be in an institution, listed with his initials only.

Trouble is, it's so easy for the initials to be mistranscribed and the birthplace to be NK

sorry all - got distracted with another cert tat arrived today (more of that later)

Charles W Coster (the correction) is his son

And yes - you're right, Jane was dead. Sorry - I was in a tizz and I was looking at the date of death for his daughter in law which was 1919 (funnily enough Alice as above) without thinking that that was a bit too late for Jane.

I think I need to go to bed and wake fresh on all this as I'm now in a muddle over my Fenton branch and I can't make sense of anything.
