  • Poorhouses...

why would a man who had always been in work on the land end up in a poor house to die??? Him and his family weren't poor....ok they weren't rich by any standard but they weren't poor and destitute...

Did poor houses take in people who were sick??

I have ancestor who was in workhouse for a couple of years before his death. He died in the workhouse of senile dementia - his wife and children were still alive on the outside. Could be worth you trying to see if the record survives as it gave quite a lot of info on my ancestor's background and even a physical description and comments like "although he wasn't a drinking man he was somewhat partial to cider'.

            Was it in England, Jilly?

            Try here:

Workhouse - the Story of Workhouses

There's details of where the records are held and what has survived at the bottom of each page about a particular workhouse.

                  Jilly

I saw some ionfo yesterday on GENUKI I think, regarding workhouse records in Scotland.

Google the exact location (village, town etc) and follow the Genuki hit.

(I was investigating Alvah, and it said only the minutes books survived for this particular one, but you might be luckier)

Many NHS hospital buildings were originally workhouse infirmaries.

the one he went to was in the grounds of a hospital..and possibly used old hospital buildings for the poorhouse...I've just looked it up and it says something about the aged and the poor....so I'm now off to check what age he was! lol

                              Yorkshire Lady

Yes, they did sometimes pay a small amount, if they were able to.

My 2 x GGPs had a daughter Jane. I knew nothing of her (no one in the family had heard of a daughter either) until I was going through the PRs.

I assumed she died young as she never appears with her parents on any census.

However...there was a Jane Holden, in the Workhouse, an imbecile from birth. On an idle whim, really, I asked for any information about her and got the shock of my life.

Good records had been kept BECAUSE her father paid a small weekly sum for her upkeep. Her admission read "at the request of her father and on the advice of Dr Somebody, MD". Her date of admission was 16 days after the birth of her youngest brother, when she was about 17 months old.

What is truly tragic about this - 1871, imbecile, 1881, imbecile, 1891....deaf and dumb. She was released in 1899, shortly after the death of her father and went into the care of her "kinsman" a vicar from the Isle of Man, to whom she was going as nursery maid.

I cannot help thinking that the death of her father and therefore the end of his payments, prompted her release.

She haunts me...did anyone go to see her, all those years?

OC I would think her Dad went to see her after all he had to go and pay for her each week.

I hope she had a happy life once she was with the vicar.

Must just tell you I applied to see if I could find a record from an ancestor in hospital in 1841. They suggested I rang this person on a London mumber. I rang and was told "We cannot divulge any information without the patients written consent." I pointed out it would be very difficult to obtain written consent from someone who died in 1875, and there was no way she would budge. "I am sorry without their written consent we cannot divulge anything"

They make up the rules as they go along! I didn't even have to prove I was a relative, but I did have to sign a declaration that this was for my own personal use and would not be published.

They sent me photocopies of all the relevant stuff, with bits blanked out which concerned other people.
