    righty ho.....

    this is me grandpa's family....

my great grandparents Wm and Mary married in 1899......

they had 10 children in total......

4 of which were born illegitimately....

    so...

on A's birth cert it states illegitimate but gives both parents names

on B's birth cert it states illegitimate but only gives mothers name

on C and D's certs it states illegitimate but gives both parents names...

what reasons would there be that on B's birth the father's name wasnt given?

Could it just have been that he wasn't at the registrar's with Mary to register the birth and therefore his name wasnt allowed to be included cos they were unmarried??

I just thought it was odd that the other children had both parents names on their certs....

Who registered the births? - That might give a clue as if only the mother went the unmarried father's name can't go on the certificate -

the unmarried father has to be there too otherwise the mother could put anyone down as the father.

so it could just quite simply be that William (for whatever reason) didn't accompany Mary to the registrar's then....

        Yes, simple as that!

Did he do the sort of work that might take him away from home at the crucial time? And have you checked to make sure that child wasn't legitimised after 1926?

the child took the married name on ....how do i check for legitimisation (or wotever the correct word would be lol )

As far as I'm aware William would either have been an ag. lab or a coal carter around about that particular time....

Duih, just realised we are probably talking Scotland here? I don't know what the Scottish law on legitimisation was.

In England, after 1926, a child could be legitimised once the birth parents married EACH OTHER. (This was retrospective)

The Registrar would issue a new cert with the decent details, lol, and cross reference the original birth cert to the revised one, so that only the revised one was ever issued.

In the English indexes that would show up as something like

            Joe Bloggs, born Q4, 1916, see Q2 1927.

ahh right...I shall check that one out at Reg House then...I would assume going by other records I have looked at that there would possibly be something written in the margin or such like....but I'll ask when i'm in again!

              cheers OC

I seem to remember someone found something like this in the Register of Corrected Entries.
