  • Very unfortunate cause of death

On the certificate I just received.

I would scan it & put it on here but I don't seem to be able to.

Anyway, my Samuel Evans, potato dealer, died aged 55.

    Cause of death?

    "Chronic diarrhoea"

    Even worse - for 4 YEARS !!!!!

Poor bloke! I would think he probably had bowel cancer that was undiagnosed, at a guess.

Could be Julie, or maybe he picked up some water-borne illness?

What a nasty way to die though!

        Yes

It would not be a very nice way to go, as soon as the food hits your intestines it comes right out again. Therefore the person wouldnt get any nutritional value from anything they ate.

Re- Colitus, you often find Diabetics develop this complaint... and a host of others as well.

Oh dear Tom :o Must have been fairly common then. 4 years though?

It could easily have been diabetes I suppose, 55 is a common age to develop it.

On the plus side according to Booth's poverty map, the road they lived in was in a fairly good area, which was interesting. Maybe that's why he lived so long with it?

Must have been all those potatoes

You do get some strange causes of death, on my gt.grandmother's death certificate cause of death is "Sudden death from excitement, large drafts of cold water imbided into her stomach in a state of heat" !!!

I just read your Mary thread (sorry, couldn't help because I got distracted by this topic).

I had a thought and googled. 1848 was the year of a cholera epidemic in London. John Snow traced the 1854 epidemic to a tainted well - which led to Bazalgette designing the London sewerage system.

I would question whether you'd really have diarrhoea for 4 years. In most cases if it isn't treated/clears up you would die of dehydration. Are you sure it says years?

Yes it most definitely does !

I am amazed he lived that long too!

                                      I guess I'll never know.
