This looks like the family in 1841:

          HO107; Piece 330; Book: 14; Folio: 23; Page: 41

Father, Francis, is described as a labourer (Irish). Perhaps he'd been a seaman?

Thanks Chris I did see that, I thought either army or Navy, and then saw they were living at Barracks Lane, Romford.........

I just had a quick look on TNA and found

              FRANCIS COGHLAN
              Born DUBLIN, Dublin
              Served in 11th Foot Regiment
              Discharged aged 45

              between 1809 and 1840

Looks promising, I am compling a nice little list of military records to look at when I eventually get to TNA

There are two Francis Coghlan deaths 1841-1851. The most likely, I'd guess, is:
                  1843 q1 Bethnal Green 2-26

                  but there's also
                  1849 q3 Lambeth 4-493

I think the Bethnal green on is more likely as the family are in shoreditch in 1851

I have also just emailed TNA for an estimate for the documents, i'm too impatient......;)

I see, on Ancestry, that there's a record of a Dublin Will in 1802 attributed to Coghlan, Francis, Whitefirar St, Dublin, oilcloth maker.
? and ancestor (?father) of the soldier?
