  • Baptisms in Chatham

The wonderful ladies on the Generation Game have found me some baptisms on the IGI which I hadn't seen previously. These were for my gg grandfather William Alfred Levy & his siblings. It said that he was baptised 4/5/1845 in Chatham & has dates for all the other siblings including one that I had been previously unaware of. Unfortuantely, they are submitted entries with no source listed. I have checked on City Ark & have been unable to locate them. Has anyone any ideas where else I could look to prove this info? I am unable to visit Chatham itself.

I think (but don't hold me it that), that most of the records for Chatham are now held in Maidstone at the county archive, your best bet would be to call them and see if they do actually hold the parish registers.

There are quite a few churches in Chatham (as you probably guessed) so you might need to narrow it down a bit, Do you have the family on the 1841 or 1851 census in Chatham?

Thanks Vikki, yes I have them on all censuses, in 1841 they were at the marine barracks & in 1851, they were at Queen street

Ok, Just got my little map book out, Queen street is smack bang in the town center, not far from the barracks at all.

There is a church on the Dock Road (can't remember its name, but I would guess if its old enough, it would be a good starting place)

off to see if I can find the details for you - Be right back

Ok, Can't find the name of it, but I did find that there is a chuch in the actual dock yard called Dockyard church (funnily enough) completed in 1810 so was deffinatly there at the time of your Levy family.

Aha, having googled, I have discovered that this church is in Frindsbury parish, which is where my ggg grandparents got married.

Are you sure its the same St Mary's? The reason I ask is that Frindsbury is the other side of the river medway

Our posts must have crossed Vikki, I didn't see that you mentioned St mary's. when I googled, it said Royal Dockyard church Frindsbury. Mind you I have been looking through their prs on cityark, with no joy. I am sure that I had tried St Mary's but will look again.

I have managed to find my ggg grandparent's marriage on there though, which has saved me getting the cert.

I found the marriag at Frindsbury All saints, I think. But I have now found a baptism at St Mary's so will just have to keep looking for the others. Cityark really is fantastic for PRs
