  • Mebroot virus

I've just been reading about the mebroot virus - which specialises in stealing bank login details - on the BBC website.

I have Windows XP and apparently it is vulnerable if it is not fully patched. A year or so ago, Microsoft detected that, unknown to me, my copy of Windows XP was not a genuine original. Since then only essential updates are downloaded.

Would patches count as essential and can someone explain, in very simple terms, how I can check that I am "fully patched" please?

I'm pretty sure that security patches DO count as essential, but I don't know how to check.

Thanks Kate - I thought logically they should, but I'm a total ignoramus when it comes to the operating system.
(Actually, I'm only slightly above ignoramus level about most other computer-related matters!)
