  • Opinions please - same person?

May I ask if you think these details relate to the same person?

I have Martha Davis Knight. birth cert states born 17 Dec 1858 Wilsford, Wiltshire, father John Knight, mother Mary Knight formerly Davis.

No problem with birth, I know she belongs to my Knight family from Wilsford.

But a contact has said that she married into his Wilsher family and I'm not 100% sure.

    marriage cert states:
    31 July 1880
groom, Albert Edward Wilsher age 21 bachelor
bride: Martha Jane Knight age 21 spinster, father John knight
one of the witness was an Emma knight

My Martha Davis Knight had a sister Emma, so could have been the witness.

After her marriage Martha appears on the census as Martha J Wilsher, born c1860 or 1861, Wilsford.

So do you think both Martha's are the same person an she changed her middle name?

    Thanks
    Sue

was she born before they married?hence her proper name being her middle name?

have you got her christening by the way?
Christening: 08 MAY 1859 Wilsford Near Pewsey, Wiltshire, England

No Jess, Martha's parents were married in 1841 and she was the 6th child.

Does father's occupation on her birth and marriage certs match up?

I'd say its quite plausible - unless you can find an alternative Martha Knight who died or married someone else.

I have several people who change their names, drop a middle name, pick up another one. I've got brides who either dress up their first name (Rose becomes Rosella) or who posh up their existing name, ie Annie becomes Elizabeth Anne.

One problem with the occupation of her father, can't read what it says on the marriage cert! but I can see it doesn't say ag lab, which he was on census and her birth cert.

I think this is whats causing me doubts, along with her changing middle name from Davis to Jane.

have you played with the IGI- I think there is (possibly) more than one john Knight in Wilsford

            OR

The children are spread out age wise

              Sorry, didn't say thanks Nell!

i've also looked for another Martha Knight born similar date in Wilsford. Wilsford is only a tiny village and I've not found another candidate.

I haven't tried the IGI Jess as I've been viewing the parish register just before Christmas and had written down all the Knights. But will go and look just in case I'd missed one!

John Knight (Martha's father) married Mary 1841 and they had 7 children between 1841 - 1862, all in Wilsford.

Just checked the IGI and yes there is another John Knight.

Also just checked my notes and my Martha's father, John has the right father on his marriage. - does that make sense? lol

But there doesn't seem to be two Martha knight's..

                          bootmaker????

Something-maker, at any rate! Mind you, this doesn't mean it wasn't the same John Knight. People did change occupation and folk about to be married often gave their father's occupation as something more grandiose.

Have you found YOUR John Knight on censuses with ag lab occupation?

I wondered that too Nell, about talking 'up' her fathers occupation.

As to what it says.. I had thought ...maker. the first bit looks like Hort, but that doesn't make sense!

Does look like Hort, but that doesn't help, does it! Maybe a trades directory of the period might have him listed?

That's a thought Nell. I have no experience of trades directories but will have a hunt around..
