  • census when at sea

    is there a site for census when men were at sea. in either the merchant or royal navy, I thought i saw something earlier but i cant find anything.

            I can tell you categorically that the 1871 census DID include men at sea. They were given the census form to complete in advance of census night and had to return it within a certain date.

            But of course the vessels would have to be in port when the forms were issued, if they were at sea before then, they wouldn't be counted.

            My gt grandfather John was listed at sea in 1871 (census enumeration district was Norfolk, then Vessels and then the name of the vessel) with his brother, who was the master of the fishing smack. Curiously, John is also listed at home with his wife, mother and two small sons!

                In the later census (1881 onwards at least) RN vessels were enumerated even when at sea. If they were in a foreign port they were not included.

                All other shipping was only included if they were moored in a British Port.
