  • Any cause of death experts?

I have an eight year old who died in 1859 cause given as "scarletina 21 days" and then "Gonoulte**** 6 hours" - think that's what the beginning part is anyway. I've had no luck searching any sites or google.

Can anyone shed any light please?

    Hallo and happy new year!

I don't recognise "gonoulte" so I think you must have misread it - can you post the image so we can take a look?

Yes, I think Christine is right, and its convulsions.

                    Hi Christine and thanks - I'm fairly sure it's a 'g'?

Thanks Julie but I think I've tried all of those and couldn't come up with anything.

It's a really feint copy - both of them I got today were.

Thank you all and sorry for doubting you Christine - I can see it now: )

Sad isn't it, Julie - and terrible for the family because the other death cert I got today was her grandfather who "fell off a load of straw and broke his neck" in the same village on the same day.

In case you are still a bit unconvinced, compare the C in convulsions with the C in certified just underneath it.

Gosh, that must have been a very black day for the family. I wonder if they had a joint funeral?

                              That's tragic!

About the word - I just speculated on what other words would be a similar shape to your initial transcription. Once I'd done that (in the context of a feverish illness) "Convulsions" seemed very likely.

I'm off to search for a coroner's report in the local papers tomorrow for the grandfather so keep your fingers crossed for a lengthy one! It's the first time I have the combination of a coroner's inquest and local paper coverage for the time so I'm not sure what to expect.
