  • Margaret Abbey .... what do you think?

I have an IGI marriage for Benjamin Todd to Margaret Abbey on 24/11/1831 in Stillingfleet, Yorkshire. Subsequent census records show her as born in Stillingsfleet, but i can't find an IGI record under any of the usual spellings for Abbey - Ebby etc.

    Can anybody else find anything?

Well now. She might have been born Stillingsfleet but baptised elsewhere, or have been born as Margaret something else. Maybe she had a stepfather whose name she adopted or perhaps she was married before.

    Off to take a look.

Can only find a baptism for
        IGI
MARGARET ABBY Birth: 25 DEC 1801 Christening: 05 FEB 1802 Wetwang With Fimber, Yorkshire, England
Parents: Father: FRANCIS ABBY Mother: ANN

No idea if Wetwang is anywhere near Stillingfleet!

Mark, is it possible she was a widow and so Abbey wasn't her original surname?

I haven't looked on FreeReg - but Wetwang Wotsit is only 28 miles away from Stillingfleet, so it may be a possible ...

There is a birth for that Margaret on 25th December, so I want it to be her!

Mark, if you can get somebody to do a lookup of the marriage entry then it will probably tell you if she was a widow or not. Well, hopefully. Also it will tell you the witnesses' names.
