I've never heard of them either, Barbara!!

Looking again, could it possible be herdsman? ??

While that would make sense, the "H" looks wrong to me.

For comparison there's an "H" in Harriet on the next line, and an "h" in Scholar a couple of lines below. Neither seem to match up

You are right Barbara - I think I was just hoping to see something I had heard of!

I've gone back to the image quite a few times over the last few weeks and just can't get it to anything I understand:(

              Thanks for looking for me.

I would guess it's a very hurried herdsman. The last five letters are I'm sure dsman & I can't think of anything else that would match. It is a common combination of occupation.

                  Thanks for that Vivienne.

I can see that those two occupations would go together logically.

Thank you for that suggestion Roger. It was (still is!) a rural community so a combination fo occupations was always possible. Seedsman would match the writing I think.

apologies if I don't reply to anyone else for a while, got to go and do a few last minute jobs shortly.

I think that the 1st letter is an s, like the one in Richardson & the next 2 could be ce as in apprentice at the bottom of the page. This would make scedsman

                          Thanks Lynn

Take it as a funny "c" and that would get us back to seedsman as suggested by Roger
