  • bit of a numpty question...

    Hi all,

Sorry if this has already been covered, but what is the best way to physically clean up old photos ? I have quite a few from my parents that are a bit grubby after 30 years of handling and inadequate storage. Presumably soap and water is a bad idea ! Are there any cleaning kits available ?

I'd rescan and then clean them up on the computer before I tried to do anything to the originals.

I probably wouldn't risk doing anything to the originals as you can do much more harm than good.

Are they colour of black and white? B&W can normally be cleaned in minute areas with water as it shouldn't do too much damage due to water being part of the developing process.
But water on colour photographs causes havoc with the tones.

We have some great pictures of my brother when he was little that have been treated appallingly - and i'd never risk touching the originals but have operated on them all in photoshop.

If you're determined then get a professional to do it - ask at Jessops or somwhere like that if they can recommend a service.

      Thanks
They're nearly all back and white - have a lovely photo of my dad from 1937 which is slightly tatty - scanning and photoshopping seems the best bet I think - especially since I want to enlarge and frame some of them.

            Hiya Paul
Not only is it the best bet, it's also a great pleasure.
Even when you think you know someone's visual features like the back of your hand, there are always 'new' things to discover which may only be realised by closely studying, or working on, a photograph.

I'm probably not putting this too well, but I find that I develop a kind of ?intimacy ? relationship ? (not sure which word I need here) with the person/s in the pic.

The shortest straw in the world

I also get New years eve /New Years Day evenings as someone mucked up the schedule and I'm the only one prepared to go in

I actually think it'll be great watching the fireworks from teh top of Canary Wharf

nice that you've found a silver lining ! To be honest I'm not really one for New years eve celebrations anyway, so I normally cover the callout but somehow I'm not this year lol

I've also just extricated myself from the technical callout rota - hopefully permanently, although the downside is I'm permanently on call as management escalation, albeit without pay lol
