  • Occupation!!!

i got a birth cert this morning and the occupation of the father was "working maltster"
now i have looked this up and it says "brewer/made or sold malt"

does anyone know what exactley the job would of been?
would it have been in a factory or something?

    thanks,
    Chris.

A maltster is part of the brewing fraternity. The grain used either in brewing or distilling has to be specially treated and steeped in warm water until it germinates when it becomes "malt". This is done in enormous vats which have to be carefully monitored. In an abbey this was a position, rather than a job.

And right at the other end of the scale, my 2 x GGF made malt in a couple of barrels in his wife's washhouse in the backyard!!!

              Hi Chris

Don't know a lot about the occupation but I have an ancestor who was a Maltster and seedsman - He grew it and helped to brew it. ( So I have been led to believe)
