  • 1881 census, Word in last column

    Good Morning everyone

I have just noticed a word (or possible squiggle) in the last column on the 1881 census for Maria Smith, She is the wife of the baker, Can anyone take a look and tell me if its a word or a squiggle

    Thanks

At first glance I thought it said "Mad" but actually it is Mdx short for Middlesex. Lambeth, where they were living, was in Surrey, and they often used that last column to tick off when they had counted people born in a different county. Maria's entry gives her birthplace as "City Little Brittian" so the person processing the form wrote in Mdx for the county.
