  • Are these the same man? Opinions please

I believe these two photos to be of my grandfather. However his elder brother was killed at the Somme and I am wondering if one could be of him. Just wondered what anybody else thought.

Also is it possible to clean them up a bit?

    thank you.

To me it looks as if the person sitting down in the first photo is older than the one in the second but that they are definitely related.

Sue I agree I think the second one looks younger than the first. First one looks like a corporal, shame you cant see the full uniform on No 2.

My granddad was a corporal in the East Yorks Regiment - his brother a Private in the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.

Granddad enlisted in Dec 1914 and was discharged Mar 1919, having been wounded in 1918. His brother was 2 years older but died in 1916, having said that having lived through the full hell of WW1 I should think granddad would look older than his years by the end of it.

Looking at them cleaned up I am thinking they are the same person. Perhaps the single image was taken when he first joined up which would mean he would look older on the photo with his friend?

The photos do look very similar, have you been on the Great War Forum? I don't know if there is enough uniform on view in photo 2 to identify, but the people on there are the experts experts, and if someone could i.d. if the uniforms are the same regiment or not, well it would confirm it for you

In the second pic, does it look like he has a black button? if so this denotes he has lost a close relative in the war.

Hello - I've been on Great War Forum and two people agree that it is the same person, and as he is wearing corporal stripes he must be my grandfather! They feel the images are too alike to be brothers unless they were twins - which they weren't!

                                Thanks for your input everybody!

My only doubt is that the ears look different ........... and maybe the chin?

a little clean for you, hope you like it.. and I think also that the gentleman seated in the first picture is the same gentleman alone in the second.
