  • James William Harding

    Hi,

I am looking for James William Harding. I have his baptism record - he was baptised in Surrey. His father is John Harding, he was a soldier and his mother is Elizabeth Harding.

John William Harding was baptised on the 26 February 1814.

I also know he was married to Louisa Geer and had 7 children - James (1843) Ann (1847) George (1852) John Harding (1850) Mary Ann (1857) Florence (1863) Arthur Harding (1866)

I have been unable to locate his birth, marriage and death records. Im wondering if anyone might have better luck. I am a newbie at all this and am useless haha.

He is lo the 1891 census. Looks like he dies 1895 in Bridgton but it only said James.

Fair enough, I was going on some research another relative gave me so unsure where she got this info from as I was never able to find marriage for louisa geer and james william harding.

How would I go about finding a birth record for him? as I say I have found his baptism record and that is all I can find. I know at the time of baptism his parents lived on croydon barracks as John (james father) was a soldier but thats the limit to my knowledge

would like to be able to delve further back into my tree if possible. although I'm sure it gets harder the further back you try and go

A baptism is all you will get in 1814 as civil registration wasn't introduced until 1837.

              So this is his baptism:

              at St John, Croydon, Surrey

However, for the same parish there is this, with birth dates:

              No. 283 born 28th January 1814
              Elizabeth

1861 census has Louisa Geor widow aged 78 living with them. This is probably where they have the name from. Have attached it as I don't think the transcription is very accurate due to the writing and could be a number of variations.

It might be difficult if James Harding's family moved around a lot with the army, but not impossible. Yes, we need to look at army records, but as John Harding is a common name it might be like looking for a needle in a haystack. It would help if we knew he came from Surrey or Sussex, for example.
