  • Is Charles and Sarah married?

    Hi again,

I am trying to trace my 2 x great grandad. According to the family story he ran off and left my 2 x great nan and kids after returning from service in WW1!

I have him on the 1911 with Annie his wife.
I have some army records that says he was discharged in March 1919.
I can see Charles Edward Lee (born Nov 1877 which matches the info on his Army paperwork) on the 1939 with his wife Sarah. I have them on several electoral registers in Reading area / Reading (except one year Sarah isn't on there but one of his sisters and one of his brothers are) which is where he did in 1953.
I can't seem to see a marriage though. Can anyone else spot one?
    Thanks again

I can only see two children not redacted, and I think these are their births:

          Births Sep 1924
          Lay Margaret H B mmn Butler Wokingham 2c 696

          Births Sep 1934
Lay Edward C mmn Lay Henley 3a 1808, also registered as
Lee Edward C mmn Lay Henley 3a 1808

There are other births in the interim period with a combination of Lee/Lay/Butler

There is also a marriage in Reading in 1912 between Charles E Lay and Sarah Butler, so did Charles marry Sarah as Lay, or did she marry a Charles E lay and then live with Charles E Lee...

Hmm, well there is a service record for Charles Edward LAY detailing his marriage to Sarah Butler, but there is also this death:

LAY, CHARLES EDWARD aged 39 - GRO Reference: 1927 D Quarter in READING Volume 02C Page 395

So it does seem possible that Sarah then lived with Charles Edward LEE, which would explain the children being registered under both LAY (her legal name as a widow) and also LEE

Yes Val and thanks Teasie. So not sure that Charles and Sarah married then as I can't see one although some Berkshire records aren't great
