  • Ellen Brown where are you?

    Good afternoon,

I have been tracking Ellen Brown b.1832 Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottm through the census. I cannot find her in 1911 or even find a death for her.

she marries in 1854 to John Spragging-Godfrey Rowbotham @ Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottm. he dies in 1886.

according to a probate record of John Spragging G. R on [16th Dec 1890] Ellen has now remarried to a John Mellors.

I cannot find 1) a marriage for Ellen & John 2) a census entry or death for Ellen.

if anyone has time to help me that would be great thank you.

I should add that I have Ellen in all census up to 1901. Thanks.

    Hi Julie
Not having much luck either. The only thing I have found on FMP is a death for Ellen Mellors in 1909 Mansfield registration area born 1837. Right area but wrong age but looking on 1901 census, it said John was born 1837 so perhaps a little mistake. Not looked where John is yet which might help. Didn't see a will though.

Lin Val & Chrissie thank you so much, I have been going crosseyed with this family.

Lin, it might be that Ellen went into Victoria infirmary in Mansfield [it was the workhouse] so she would be registered in Mansfield. If she died at home then she would have been registered under Basford. Did you say there was probate for John's death?

Val that is looking very promising thank you.

Chrissie, hmmn that is looking very good, though I suspect that the cert would be the clincher. [I hadn't spotted the marriage on my disc, so may well be a reg office job]

another little problem is that Ellen and first husband John Spragging-Godfrey Rowbotham had a son in 1856 [Basford dist] Edward Smith Godfrey Rowbottham. I see him on a few census then he vanishes. There is an Edward J Rowbottom b. 1856 in Newark, Notts but this isn't ESG Rowbottham.

can anyone else spot him please?

According to a report in the paper, John Mellors of Sutton married Ellen Godfrey of Kirkby in Sutton Parish church on 8 April 1890. They were married by the Rev W W Williams.

using Godfrey actually brings up Edward and his marriage/wife in census. so I am relatively happy now

I also ought to add that it looks like they moved from Kirkby to Sutton in Ashfield, [which is only next town from Kirkby] as they married there and lived almost opposite the church. Which will tie in with the reg district of Mansfield.

just to add [something that I wasn't aware of] is that ALL districts now have been abolished, so we won't see Basford or Mansfield after 2012. it'll just be Nottinghamshire... be a nightmare for family historians.

                                    MANSFIELD REGISTRATION DISTRICT
                                    Registration County : Nottinghamshire.
                                    Created : 1.7.1837.
Abolished : 1.4.2012 (to become part of Nottinghamshire registration district).

presumably though [she says hopefully] it'll state Sub District Mansfield in the County of Nottinghamshire.

Yep I spotted that and then discovered I already had it! :emb: numpty I am! anyway I had a look and saw where they were living so knew that they'd be registered in Mansfield. I kind of presume now that they'll be buried in the churchyard adjoining St. Mary's.

Ellen was my 3x grt grand aunt
