  • Cannot find death of great granddad

Thank you for letting me join, i am new to this so please bare with me,
    Can someone please help?
I am creating a family tree, and got stuck on my great Granddad, I have found his birth details also his mother and his wife and date of married but cannot find when and where he died, I have tried all the web sites without luck, can anyone please advise?

His name is Herbert Porter, born 1868 in Keyingham Yorkshire,
His mother was Mary Ann Porter Born 1854 in Hull
He married a Bertha E Porter in 1891.
He is shown as residing in the 1181 census at 35 St Georges Road, Newington, Yorkshire - East Riding, England.
But is not showing anywhere after that
His wife had children up to 1894,
I have checked immigration records without luck,

Any advise would be most welcome,

Hi and welcome. My husband has family from Hull and several of the were lost at sea. There is no death record in the general index for them. The best place may be to look in newspapers. There is also a website about lost fishermen of Hull. For example, in a great storm of c1894 when 15 trawlers were lost at the same time.

I think this is Bertha's death:

        Name:
        Bertha Porter
        Estimated birth year:
        abt 1870
        Registration Year:
        1913
        Registration Quarter:
        Oct-Nov-Dec
        Age at Death:
        43
        Registration district:
        Sculcoates
        Parishes for this Registration District:
View Ecclesiastical Parishes associated with this Registration District
        Inferred County:
        Yorkshire East Riding
        Volume:
        9d
        Page:
        169
Herbert seems to be AWOL on a few census records, but since his occupation is "fisherman" he could have been absent from home quite often on census night.

Try this catalogue for Hull History centre. There may be others too, I'm not at my computer which has my website list.
Search the Hull History Centre catalog which contains information and descriptions to over 330,000 items in the archives and local studies collections

There are two more children born after the 1911 census: Bertha's maiden name was Gabbitas. If that's the right death reg for Bertha in 1913, it looks like she died shortly after giving birth to Barbara, who herself only survives for 8 months as described in newspaper cutting above.

                Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
                PORTER, BERTHA GABBITAS
GRO Reference: 1911 M Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 168 Order

                PORTER, BARBARA ROSE GABBITAS
GRO Reference: 1913 S Quarter in SCULCOATES Volume 09D Page 339

I haven't looked for pre-1911 children but given the scope for misspellings/mistranscriptions for Gabbitas it would be worth wildcarding (can't remember if it lets you?) when searching on the GRO index.

                  Christine ......

............ you can't wild card on GRO Index, but you can ask for Similar Sounding Names or Similar Sounding Variations, in addition to Exact Matches Only.

I have to admit that I haven't worked out which is best, especially for a name like Gabbitas!

Herbert Porter & Bertha Gabbitas marry in Dec q 1891 Hull 9d 331

there is another marriage for a Herbert Porter to a Annie Grossberg dec q 1913. vol 9d page 605. [could Herbert have remarried so the children would have a mother whilst he was out at sea?]
