  • Help with this family please

    Hi

Can someone help me find more information on this family.

Will start with the most recent information and work backwards

John Robert Howard born 1866 in Rotherhithe. Parents John Howard and Mary Eliza Mack.

John and Mary Mack marry in 1862 in Rotherhithe. Father of John is listed as William and occupation as Cabinet maker.

1861 census shows John living in Rotherhithe with William (carpenter) aged 56 born Ipswich , Sarah aged 53 born Ipswich and listed as deaf.

In 1851, again in Rotherhithe I have found William who is as "superannuate police officer" which worries me. Aged 47 born Ipswich. Sarah aged 43 born Ipswich. John aged 14 born Bemondsey. Robert aged 11 born Bermondsey. Charlotte aged 9 born Bermondsey. Lucy aged 5 born Bermondsey.

In 1841, the family are still in Rotherhithe (subscribed as Minard). Williams occupation is shipwright. In addition to the children in 1851 is also Sarah aged 12

So my questions are: is this actually them in 1851. everything other than Williams occupation matches, however I am having issues finding Sarah's maiden name. I have searched GRO and used Lucy and Charlotte as searches, but neither have the same mothers name. I then also searched for the boys and still no matching surname.

Unless William has a habit of marrying only women called Sarah born in Ipswich im a bit stumped. I also looked at names where perhaps Lucy and Charlotte were middle names, and still nothing seems to fit

This may be off the wall but have you considered:

HOWARD, CHARLOTTE - [MMN not listed]
GRO Reference: 1842 M Quarter in FREEBRIDGE LYNN UNION Volume 13 Page 153

    HOWARD, LUCY MMN: ANDREWS
GRO Reference: 1845 S Quarter in FREEBRIDGE LYNN UNION Volume 13 Page 157

Yes, I did think about those. What put me off was the other children. I might have to try and investigate a second marriage to see if that's a possibility

No marriage between a William Howard and a Sarah andrews

There is a Robert Howard age 1 born in county living in Rotherhithe on the 1841 census for your family and I found this

            HOWARD, ROBERT MMN: PILBROUGH
GRO Reference: 1839 D Quarter in ROTHERHITHE Volume 04 Page 356

It is very hard to read the occupation of William Howard on that census as the ink has faded but if you think shipwright that would not be inconsistent with carpenter/cabinet maker - all working with wood. So your only 'odd' one out is the Superannuated Police Officer.

I wonder if he could have done that for a few years in between the other occupations - maybe invalided out??
