  • Occupation description

I'm trying to read an occupation. The enumerator's writing is very good but this has still got me stumped.
John Hardy aged 21. It looks like Boot Rabitter ?!
    Ancestry

    The same enumerator has listed:
    Boot fitter
    Boot finisher
    Boot maker
    Boot sewer
    Boot top fitter
    Boot rivetter (sic)

Is this a stage of the process of boot making?
Hardy is listed in later censuses as a Boot Maker.

    Thanks for your help.

(will this be a doh! moment when you tell me?)

I have even looked through the 1881 census ,just putting that occupation, but nothing comes up, but three Rabbiters do all in Lincolnshire.

I suspect it should be rivetter. Perhaps the householder didn't know how to spell rivetter!

Val - yes I also tried the 1881 employment search but only found boot rivetter and people catching rabbits.
OC - I'll take it as that at the moment although I would have thought the enumerator would have spelt it properly.

          Thank you both for looking.

The enumerator was paid to copy what the householder wrote, not to ponder whether it made sense or whether it was spelled correctly, lol! But who knows, maybe there was some obscure thing done to boots called rabbeting.
