Have you clicked on the page number, after the volume number, of the hit?
Post 1912 the entries are cross referenced. Before that, you get four (or sometimes six names) and have to use something like census to try and match up the pairings, but beware of two people in the list having the same forename e.g. your John Smith has possible candidates Mary Jones and Mary Brown. You would then need to check the GRO birth index for a subsequent child and its mother's maiden name to help you sort out the couples.
