I am now looking into my Baker line and had Eliza Baker b 1844 Horton Kirby Kent. Parents I had as Thomas Baker and Hannah from the census both parents born Brighton area of Sussex.Just received the birth certificate of Eliza and itsay mother is Hannah Baker late Linden(looks like) formerly Gray. Not found a marriage that would fit with Thomas Baker.

The GRO Index has mother's maiden name as GRAY:

      BAKER, ELIZA GRAY

1861 has Hannah and Thomas both born Warbleton, Sussex which is Hailsham Reg District - not that that helps much pre 1837.

On 1851 census it looks like Rebecca 20 and Jane 11 are probably from Hannah's previous marriage.

surely they would have a different surname. There was also a Samuel baptised about a year before Eliza but he doesnt appear on the census so presumably died

Not if they had taken his step father's name.

BAKER, SAMUEL GUY must be a mis trans?

I cannot see a birth for Jane Baker in Kent 1840 with Gray as MMN only a Buggs and Slingsby. It's possible they didn't register her. Have you found a baptism for her?

no but I will look, so they must have baptised and buried Samuel at the same time.

I'm guessing that birth perhaps goes with this marriage?

Thomas Sinden - Male - Marriage Date:4 Feb 1828 - Marriage Place: Warbleton, Sussex, England - Spouse: Hannah Guy
                          FHL Film Number:1468993 IT 1

Oops ignore please - just realised his name was Samuel Baker.

I've lost it now Kat, but sorry, I suddenly realised that was yet another Thomas and Hannah. They seem to grow on trees.

I have been rushing because I knew I hadn't got long before I had to cook the dinner. You can't rush this game:o
