  • Sharplin naval records

William Sharplin was born in St Leonard's in Shoreditch 1822, he was a rope maker in the navy. Can anyone access navy records and find out which ships he served on with dates and destinations please.

I'm also struggling with Williams parents who I believe were John Sharplin and Jane ...... who Married 1805 in Horseledown Bermondsey. I know my Sharplin ancestors had a long history of being in the navy so I expect John was also in the navy also. Thank you

If he was a rope-maker, it's likely he never went to sea but was employed in a naval rope-works. Have you found him in any censuses (e.g. 1851)?

That side of the family were all in the navy, through the years, it is believed by relatives that John was on the 2nd ship that reached Australia, as they were circumnavigating

According to family history passed down from generation to generation John Sharplin was a rope maker aboard HMS Challenger during it's 4 and a half year voyage. Embarking in 1872 and returning home in May 1876. John retired from the navy on the 13 May 1881. That's the only records known

Do you think you may be mistaken in thinking that the John Sharplin who married in 1805 is the John you are looking for? John would have been born around 1784. I doubt this John would have been aboard HMS Challenger as he would have been about 88 years old at the start of the expedition. Or did you mean his son William who would have been about 50?

Apologies my mother's memory is not so great and is getting mixed up. Johns (b1805) grandson John(b1843) was the rope maker aboard the Challenger. So I'm back to square one with finding any info on John Sharplin(b1805)

My mistake John (b1805) was the grandfather of the John that was on the Challenger from 1872-76. He was 32 when they sailed. Still looking for a wife or parents for John (1805).
