on ancestry there is an 1859 electoral register and there is a number after each persons name. What does that number represent please?

I can't see a number Gloryer. Where exactly do you mean i.e. on the front page or the actual page?

He was elector number 107 in that list I think. Today’s polling cards have a number unique to each person on them. When you go to vote you will see that the assistants have a version of the register with the numbers on it. They cross check the number on the polling card against their list, write it on the polling paper you are given and score out your name on their list. And some folks still think voting is a secret ballot - if the powers that be took it into their heads, they could keep track of which way any one of us voted. Call me sceptical but I reckon they already do this with “persons of interest”.
