  • Dead ends with Devon lines

    Hello,

I've hit a dead end with the origins of the following individuals:

Roger Hatherly and Grace Roberts, married in Thorverton in 1713
Roger Westcott, christening children in Thorverton in the 1710s
William Wyatt and Sarah Brown, married in Plympton in 1781

    I'd appreciate any help!

    Adam

Findmypast has devon records. Have you looked there? Have you also considered these people might be from a neighbouring county?

Thorverton is not far from Tiverton and there was a corridor to Plymouth from that area in the 1700's of people looking for work. Plymouth offered more opportunities and many lived in Plympton which back in the 1700's was an important town in its own right. Nowadays it is part of Plymouth but well worth looking at to see if you can find anybody there. Do you know the occupations of your people? Plympton and environs were clay pits of great importance giving plenty of work. Plymouth Dockyard would have been a great draw for anybody involved in shipping. Also Plymouth was always accessible to Cornwall via the numerous ferries in that area so people may have lived in places like Torpoint/Saltash/Maker/Cremyll or even Cawsand and travelled to the Dockyard by ferry.
