Hum!
The "missing" husband is Edward/Edwin/Edwin Charles/Charles Edwin (you get the picture) Haughton/Houghton (and other variations) b abt 1847 in London. Bought himself out of the Army in 1877, admitted to Fulham Rd Workhouse briefly in Dec 1879,and then again briefly in Jan1880 (medical cause - heart), is listed on son Frederick's baptism in Bengeo, Herts in July 1880 and then "disappears" from the records. A man in his early 30s with a heart condition probably wouldn't have survived very long, but try as I might, I can't find a death for him.
When daughter Ethel (the one b in Jersey) was sent to Canada n 1883 her file says words to the effect "mother living, deserted by father" Ellen and the other children followed Ethel to Canada in 1884.Always looking for Goodwins in Berkshire.

I concur with Linda's findings. Pehaps she usually referred to herself as a widow, but the enumerator then pressed for additional information and she had to state that her husband had cleared off, rather than died.

Genealogists never die - they just swap places in the family tree
