  • William Pepper, Private 3rd Class, Royal Marines

    Hello,

    Here is what I know:

    1) Born late 1799, Millbrook, Bedfordshire
    2) Was in the Royal Marines from 1824 - 1843
    3) Attested at Chatham
    4) Discharged due to being an invalid in 17th Company
    5) Shows up in 1830 as Private 3rd Class on board the Scylla, on the Malta and Tripoli station. Portsmouth Division, 86th Company
    6) Was a Greenwich Pensioner on the 1851 Census in Lidlington, Bedfordshire

Can anyone find out anything else about William's naval service? I have only gathered these bits and pieces from a single census record, his discharge and attestation papers, and the 1830 record dug up by a forum member. I already know about the rest of his life.

    I'd appreciate any help!

I suspect information about Royal Marine service will be held at the National Archives at Kew, which usually means either a personal visit or paid research.
To put a bit of meat on the bones you have already, have you googled the names of the ship and the station for general information, which should give some insight into his working life?
