  • Ireland help please.

    Hi
I have a Patrick Connell married in Manchester England and I have all his records up to 1911.
That census says he was born in Tuam Galway around 1837. His marriage certificate says his father was David a farmer.

What I am looking for is a record that will confirm his birth.

    thanks
    Jan x

    Have you tried this link?

This website contains images from the NLI’s collection of Catholic parish register microfilms. The registers contain records of baptisms and marriages from the majority of Catholic parishes in Ireland and Northern Ireland up to 1880.

The NLI Catholic Registers in the link provided by Elaine above are not indexed, only browsable.
You can access an indexed version for free via Findmypast so this can save a lot of time and effort. ( The same records are behind the paywall on ancestry.) Of course, the index is only as good as the transcriptions - there are some really bizarre ones! But you can report transcription errors on FMP so the index will improve over time. There is also the facility to search for a child with specific names for each parent to narrow things down. This is useful when you have found one child and then find siblings. The search form automatically searches for first name variants but is set up for exact for surnames, but you can tick for variants if you wish, plus it allows wildcard searches. And you still have the option to scroll through the pages for someone who should be there but doesn't come up via the index search.
The usual warnings - lots of variant spellings and some registers have Latin first names. So Pat as Patritius, Mary as Maria, James as Jacobus etc. Surnames are never Latinised though. Good overview here: https://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit....registers.html
          Good luck.
