Thanks both. Looks promising with the Callan area. Pity it doesn't give exact date of arrival. For it to be my woman it needs to be an arrival on or before 17 September 1907.
Could either of you find the corresponding record in Passengers Leaving the uk collection on FMP which would give date of sailing?
Thanks again.

Christine
Postscript: I don't currently have an ancestry sub either so can't see the dates/location on this search result. My woman was visiting relatives in Ireland in 1907 before returning to New York, so hopefully both these records are for her arriving in Ireland at start of visit and arriving back in New York.

Thanks for all the above: after further digging, I am confident that I have matched this Nellie Meagher back to her family in Ireland but would like to complete the timeline for her - so any help with the gaps below would be appreciated. Warning - age varies over time!
All the Irish records are as MAHER, whilst all the US records that I have found so far are MEAGHER. I don't need info at this stage on any of the brothers, but would like to complete details for Nellie and her sister Margaret.

Birth: registered as Ellen Maher. Born 5 August 1868, Tullamain, Co Kilkenny. Registered in Callan. Baptised 7 August 1868. Parents Patrick Maher and Bridget Maher formerly Coghlan (variant spellings eg Coughlin, Coghlin etc) on birth registrations of other siblings.
Her elder sister, Margaret was born 18 Feb 1866 in Tullamain.

Pre-1892 - departure from Ireland and arrival in NY - GAP
1892 NY census: Nellie Meagher 19 dressmaker. With older sister Margaret/Maggie and brother John, in Brooklyn, NY
1900 US census: GAP
1905 NY census: Nellie Magher 24 dressmaker. With siblings James, Thomas and Margaret. All at 82 State Street, Brooklyn.
24 July 1907 Nellie Meagher 32 dressmaker travelling with sister Margaret arrives Liverpool on the Carmania from NY
28 August 1907 Misses N and M Meagher depart Queenstown to NY on the Carmania
4 September 1907 Nellie and Margaret Meagher, dressmakers, arrive in NY, residents returning to 82 State St, Brooklyn. Relative in Ireland recorded as Mary Meagher, Tullamain. But recorded as Bridget on 1910 travels below
1910 US census - GAP
1910 UK arrival incoming - GAP - should be on FMP?
7 September 1910 Nellie and Margaret Meagher depart Queenstown on the Carmania for NY
14 September 1910 Nellie 30 and Margaret 35, dressmakers, arrive back in NY heading for 82 State Street, Brooklyn. This time, the relation in Ireland recorded as Bridget Meagher, Callan, Co Kilkenny
1915 NY census - GAP
1920 US census - Margaret Meagher, 50, head, no occ, Nellie Meagher, sister, 45, dressmaker department store. 1141 Carroll Street, Brooklyn. Both are aliens, and both say they arrived 1894, even though they are in 1892 NY census
1925 NY census - GAP
1930 US census - GAP
1935 NY census - GAP
1940 US census - Margaret Meagher, head, 70, no occ, Nellie Meagher, sister 64, dressmaker. 746 St John's Place, Brooklyn, NY.
Post-1940 death - GAP

Also - were there any other visits to Ireland?
Thanks in anticipation,
Christine

Sorry - no idea as i haven't researched the various brothers' lives in the USA. It's really only Nellie - and by extension, Margaret, as they seem to have been like peas in a pod - that I'm interested in.
As for those possible pre-1892 sailings you've found, it doesn't look as if there is enough info to be sure which, if any, might be her. Wonder if she and Margaret emigrated together?

So at least three journeys back home in 12 years 1899-1911, typically from July to early September. A big effort given that it was a week's journey each way as well.
Any idea of the likely cost?

The number of journeys back home seems really unusual to me - and I can't see that they would have been rolling in money.
My Irish emigrants around this time (1880s to 1910s) never made it back to Ireland at all so far as I know - apart from my grandad and 2 of his sisters who sailed back for a visit in 1914. They were literally mid-Atlantic when war was declared, and never made it back to the US, all three ending up marrying and dying in Ireland. (I'm researching this to help a friend.)
