  • Help with a will

Have not had to decipher many wills and could do with a bit of help. Have my Moore's in Nailstone, Leics and am trying to work out 2 wills and I can't read a lot of the names but have just found a note after the early will and thought I would start there first.

John Moore's will 1681 names brother John Elton as executor. The page after I have tried to work out fully but could do with some input please...

This is to ~ whom it may ~ that I Mary Moore of~ in the county of ~ any thing of any ~ made by husband but what was ~ to John Elton So it would the ~ to ~ and in that ~ his to be the ~ set to my hand

    have attached the original

    Thanks

I think some of the spelling is very phonetic so with your clue I think the place name is Nilston (Nilfton).
It might start .... This is to verify (?satisfy) whom it may concern that I Mary Moore of Nilston in the county of ..... do disonne (disown?) anything of any wills made by my husband but what was made to John Elton.

Struggling with the rest as I can't get it big enough on my ipad mini!

Think she's saying she only knows of one will?

Just looking in briefly after a long hard day, this is the first line:

"This is to sertyfy whom it may consarn that I Mary"

Ah, yes sertyfy, Jill. I think the same word is on the last line too.

That makes sense Anne as I couldn't work out what she was disowning as it were.

Thanks Jill, that really does help.

This is to sertyfy whom it may consarne that I Mary
Moore of Nilston in the County of Lec do
disowne any thing of any wille made by my
husband but what was maid to John Elton
So I would have the ? to throw out the
? that? I put in and that I do one his
to be the wille I have here set to my hand
            to satisfy the ?

I keep toying with the word "court" for the missing words, but it doesn't quite make sense.

Could you please post the rest of the will, Elaine.

I think two of the words are "cort", but I'm not sure about the word at the start of the 6th line.

                            ?? Could it be

I do (assuage) my fate to all mighty God now my body ....

I know there was a set formula for will writing, but it's so long since I read any pre 1857 wills that I'm out of touch! I think I read somewhere that the set wording may differ slightly from region to region, believed to be because of the different dioceses.

Thank you for taking the time to transcribe the big one Elizabeth, can't say thank you enough to all of you. Those surnames are familiar to the registers too and it was Hennery...just could not work that one out. Will put it next to my scribble and also check those names.

I'm hoping, looking at what you have all helped me with, it will aid the transcription of the other 2 wills
