  • Ellen, Edward and Gerhart Henning

I have my 3 x great aunt Ellen Wilkinson b 1838 Tollesbury, Essex on ’41 and ’51 censuses with her parents and then she disappears and returns married to an Edward Robert Henning b c1834 Germany.
    1871 census:

    Edward R Henning 35 b Germany
    Ellen Henning 33 b Tollesbury,Essex
Gerhart Ed Henning or Geohart 11 b Cape of…Hope, South Africa (Assume ..Good Hope)
Florence S Henning 8 Mountnessing, Essex
Robert John Henning 4 Shenfield, Essex

I cannot find Gerhart Ed? on any other censuses but I came across this on 1911 census:

    Name: Edward Henning
    Age in 1911: 48
    Estimated birth year: abt 1863
    Birth Place: Tollesbury, Essex, England
Married to Edith with two children. They married in 1903 Tonbridge, Kent.
Occupation Cape colony pensioner – Colonial Forces.
Tollesbury was such a small village at the time and my Wilkinson's lived there for several generations - surely this cannot be a coincidence???
I think he must have travelled back to South Africa before 1881 and returned to England before his marriage in 1903 but cannot see him on any passenger lists. I do not have World Ancestry to check.

I also found this baptism in Grahamstown, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa for a Johan Edward Henning with parents Edward Robert and Ellen 1859
bap Johan Edward Henning 2 1859.jpg
I think the CM must be the Cape Mounted Rifles.
I did browse the baptisms to see if there were any further births but by 1862 they were back in England for daughter Florence's birth.
I cannot see a marriage for Ellen Wilkinson and Edward Robert Henning and wonder if they married in South Africa. How/why on earth did she travel there! Again I cannot see any passenger lists for her.

Although Edward gives his birth year as abt 1863 on the 1911 census his death reg has him b 1859
I have Henning Hennig, Hemming and a Hanning for the various births and marriages of their children.

Can anyone find something I may be missing ?

Thank you so much for that Elaine.
Evidence mounting up. However proving my Gerhart Ed Henning is Edward Henning of the CMR is probably going to be impossible.

Have had a look at posts and I gleaned that on the Anglo Boer War Forum there was a chap with refs for the Cape Mounted Rifles who was willing to do look ups, just couldn't find it on there and you need to register. Might be worth a look.

Hello Elaine, Yes I have all of Herman's history - he took the name Hemming - his Army records, his marriage in S A to Louie Searra and even found him back here on 1939 register but then he has become Henry!! still with Louie and as " Total Disablement S A Military Pensioner Incapacitated"
I wasn't sure at first - because of the Hemming name - until I found on his attestation papers yesterday his brothers -Edward and Robert , 2 sisters and parents in it. Clinched it
I feel sure now I have the right Gerhard (Edward) - his father was in the Cape Mounted Rifles too.

I might contact Anglo Boer War Forum and see if they can help me with Ellen Wilkinson and Edward Robert Henning. He might have access to some records I haven't been able to find.

Thanks so much for your help.

Just to say I did look Kat and found nothing of their travels to and from the Cape. It is possible that Ellen went to the Cape as an immigrant as I gather about that time they were populating the place with Soldiers, German farmers and as is necessary Women. Cant see how she got there though.

The only thing I could find was the burial records for Ellen and Edward in London but you may have them.

I too would be interested in how you got on.

Thanks both of you There are five trees on Ancestry with this family but all of them have Gerhard/Geohard born in Balth Trica which was how it was transcribed. (FMP has South Africa) Just shows that they never even looked at the 1871 census very carefully.
Ellen could have been a camp follower but I hope she wasn't - I've read too many historical novels about them during the Napoleonic wars in Spain. She came from Tollesbury, a tiny oyster dredging community at the time. Perhaps she got a bit bored lol or met her husband in Essex and decided to follow him.

Yes I do have the burial records, thanks Vera.
