  • anybody know what nbs is?

on 1901 census Julius Klemp has his birth place mistranscribed as dominican republic.... It actually says Denmark but not sure what it says after that it looks like NBS but unsure if anybody has any ideas please?

Well BS can stand for British Subject so perhaps Non British Subject?

Yes, I would agree with Judith. Usually on a census there is this note beside the birthplace of anyone born outside the UK and Ireland. As Judith says BS is sometimes used, or written out in full 'British Subject'. It follows that there must also be a 'Non' category as well.

Ah, yes UJ, another possibility. Maybe we should study the census instructions which can be found at the beginning of each district, although you need to fiddle around a bit to get those pages.
