I wonder - there is a Military Service record for a Gerald Canton record for 1918 - 1921 but states Merchant Navy ...I do know from my dad that in WW2 most Merchant ships had a Royal Navy Gunner on board ...I wonder if they did in WW1 - or is this a different Gerald Canton ??

        Name Gerald Canton
        Event Type Military Service
        Event Year Range 1918-1921
        Event Place United Kingdom
        Birth Year 1898
        Merchant Navy
if it is him I would presume he was a rear Gunner on board ship
ADDED if it is the same man it would mean he married aged 17 to Annette

I can't see a problem with that Allan, he's bound to be deceased by now

p.s. His birth doesn't seem to tally with the marriage and death you have been posting though does it?

Yes, I have Gerald Turner Canton marrying Annette K Castle and having a daughter Myra Constance. He seems to have been born in new Zealand (from 1911 census) and moved to England before 1911 and served in our Forces before moving back to Dunedin in NZ, where he died in 1961 age given 79. I suspect his father may have been Walter Canton in Dunedin (from Probate reg 1930) but he does not appear in the NZ BMD. I was hoping that the military records might give a parent. Next of kin will probably be his wife.

Yes garstonite. I agree change of occupation casts doubt on whether this is same man. Unless I am confusing two different men Walter was b1857 son of Alfred G and Jane E (from 1861 and 1871 censuses) and he went to NZ after 1871 and married Kathleen M J Westroffe in 1885 so the proposed date of birth for Gerald does not quite fit. I am missing something.

His occupation on 1911 is Technical Journalist - Engineering b 1880 . Boarding with William James and Marie Aston and their 6 children. Do the names ring a bell?

I don't have World Ancestry but I see he was in Dunedin Central, Otago after his return to NZ and just wondered if you had looked at this one - he might have been with parents?? :

The Service Record can be obtained from National Archives. I would suggest that as he married in 1915 his parents would be named as NOK and altered to his wife after their marriage. Might be worth ordering the SR.

Walter is not in my line and I suspect that Gerald is not either, whether he is related to Walter or not, so I do not want to spend any cash. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread.
