  • New Zealand Births

Arthur J Langham married Frances Elizabeth Greaves in England in 1916. Went to NZ and had a child. Found the divorce papers dated 1921 where Elizabeth got custody of 'the child' . Doesn't say age or sex.

No records of a birth in GB

    Thanks

    Linda

You can only see NZ online indexes for births more than 100 years ago so today, the last date available is 31/01/1918
There is only one LANGHAM birth between 01/011916 and today and the parents are not correct so not your one I'm afraid.

Online marriages today go to 31/01/1938. Here is a list of the LANGHAM females and LANGHAM males who married 01/01/1916 to 31/01/1938. Presumably you know when your couple arrived in NZ and we know that no birth occurred either here or there up to 31/01/1918 so you can see that all of these people were too old to be your child apart from the 1935 girl and she would have been only 16/17 at the time.

1929/2594 Selena Hellen Langham Walter Muir
1935/10452 Norah Kathleen Langham Barisa Antunovich
1923/3626 Rita Langham William Harry Ross
1921/9648 Kathleen Langham David Rufus Williams
1919/3606 Ruby Langham Frank Henry Hibbs Mowlem

1929/5598 Beryl Irene Baker Albert Edgar Cook Langham
1926/1215 Myrtle Ruby Burke William Harold Langham

There's few bits in Papers Past, child is 12 mths old

          LANGHAM v. LANGHAM.
Frances Elizabeth Langham applied for a divorce on the ground of the habitual drunkenness of her husband, Arthur Joseph Langham. Mr. P W. Jackson appeared for petitioner, who stated that she married her husband, then a member of the N.Z.E.F., at Woolwich, London, in March, l9l6. They lived in London for fifteen months, and came to New Zealand in 1917. She lived with him until last October. He had always been a heavy drinker, and he had sold up the home at Stratford and spent the proceeds. She had maintained herself with a little money she had and also by working. They came to Wellington in May, 1918. He had been recently tried on a criminal, charge of theft at Wellington and admitted to probation for two years. She had a child twelve months old. The case was adjourned for the production of further evidence.

New zealand bmd's state a death is sealed for 50 yrs unless the date of birth was 80 or more yrs ago. The child may have ended up in australia though, if that is the right marriage.

How amazing, thanks so much everyone. Arthur was my Grandad's brother. When he eventually came back in England he lived with the family and my Mum said her and the other children were all really scared of him and my Grandad made him leave in the end.

                                  Will follow all this up

                                  Many thanks again
