  • William Bryan b1880 Leics

According to a newspaper article written in 1984 by his son, Reg Bryan of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, his father William Bryan enlisted in the Fourth Leicestershires and was killed in action WW1 on Hill 60 (no date / year given).

In 1911 the family are living at 54 Bassett St., Leicester.

Reg also states that his widowed mother Edith married George Day (1923, Leicester).

Is anyone please able to find any info about this family? e.g. William's parents, his military record, death etc, when son Reg went to Canada

Just to confuse matters .. there's a Wm Bryan d 31/8/1954 ... probate granted Leicester 27/10/1954 to Edith Bryan, widow, 46 Upper Fox St., Leic.
    ... is this a coincidence ???

As you can see going round in circles with this one, so any help very much appreciated.

This is the birth for Reginald - BRYAN, REGINALD FRANK WILLIAM mmn GARNER - GRO Reference: 1907 M Quarter in LEICESTER Volume 07A Page 172

From the marriage details in post #5 this looks a good bet for the family in 1901 with father William who is a gardener -

Here's a bit about the 4th Bn Leicestershire Regiment:

                  WWI Deployments -1/4thBattalion T.F.
4.9.14 Oxford Street, Leicester: Lincoln& Leicester Bde. North Midland Div. To Luton area. Nov. Bishop's Stortfordarea. 3.3.15 landed at Havre. 12.5.15 formation became 138th Bde. 46rh Div.21.1.16 embarked at Marseilles for Egypt but disembarked next day as move wascancelled. 11.11.18 138th Bds. 46th Div. France; Sains du Nord, S.E. of Avensnes.

And from the Royal Leicestershire Regiment's website

"In 1908 on the creation of the Territorial Force the Regiment’s two Volunteer battalions became the 4th and 5th Battalions."

                  and

"By this time [Spring 1915] the first of the Territorial battalions of the Regiment had arrived in France. The 4th and 5th Territorial Battalions proved themselves worthy members of the Regiment in the battle of Loos. Their splendid work in the attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt in October 1915, which had held up the advance, was one of the most brilliant exploits of the war and involved men almost entirely from the County and City of Leicester."

He's not listed on the Royal Leicestershire Regiment's online database, but that's not unusual because their records are far from complete.

Edited to add link to info on Hill 60 .... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle...(Western_Front)

If that's the right family in 1901 I think this is a good bet for your William's birth. I cross checked with a couple of the other children and there was a birth for them under mmn Wells. There is also a possible marriage that would fit of a William Bryan to a Jane Wells in Leicester Dec 1872.

According to Wiki, the battle of Hill 60 was in the Ypres area, dates 7–22 April, 1–7 May 1915, and, if I've read it properly, there was very little loss of life during the actual battle. However the area was taken by the German army and remained in its occupation for the next couple of years.
I'm wondering if there could have been some confusion on the part of the son Reginald - i.e. William took part in the above battle but was killed in action at a later date??

I thought I had posted this but it seems I hadn't - I think the William Bryan and Edith in 1939 may possibly be the marriage between William Bryan and Edith Wise in Leicester Sept 1922?
