For information for those interested in Irish ancestry, the 1926 census referred to here covers the 26 counties within the Republic of Ireland. There was an identical census taken in the 6 counties of Northern Ireland at the same time. Unfortunately it has disappeared. Conspiracy theories abound. It has almost certainly been destroyed, but no-one at the Public Record Office in Belfast or elsewhere knows precisely how or why. (Destruction by German bombing in WW2 is one theory but there are others).
