  • Back to my Olleys in Norfolk

I have got this far up to now:My 2x Gt Grandparents maternal

James Olley Gamekeeper b.c.1821 Stody Norfolk & married Elizabeth Knowles b.1833 Hunworth.

According to the marriage cert they married 29.Jan 1858 Hunworth Parish Church.

Parents: John Olley c.1786 Father of Groom (married to Ann) William Knowles b.May 1833 (Hannah Jarvis)

    Children: Alexander1859,Mary Ann Sebina1863,Henrietta 1865,Clara 1868,James1871,Eliza jane 1874 Maud Isabel 1878
    William J 1863,Georgianna 1854,Alice 1858
    Alexander is my Gt Grandfather.

I started to research John Olley & Ann but not sure if they are correct:Can anyone help

    The ones I have are John Olley b.c.1785 Suffield/Felmingham retired Gamekeeper/Carter m.Ann Butler b.1792 Blickling/Antingham.
They had 4 children one of which was James(Gamekeeper) & they also had John b.Stody who was a warriner.

1851c HO107/776/32 shows them living The Green Hunworth & also the same on the 1861

Just need to make sure before I carry on as it has been quite a while since I did any searches

Thank you for all this & yes I had the details for Alexander except for his baptism.
One thing with him though,a marriage was never found for him to his spouse Martha Sarah Ellen Eliza Bunn.
Someone suggested he was married c.1880 but not to Martha but no name was given.
Alexander & Martha had 3 children. The first son William was named as Bunn but the 2 others were born with surname Olley.
William was born Newcastle,Alexander J.F Olley was born Basford Notts,Mary Hannah Easter born Salford.Probably because Alexander moved about as he worked on the railway.
They eventually settled in Irlam,Lancashire & that is where they died & were buried.
Alexander J.F Olley was my Grandad

Sorry - was ruling out a marriage at this time.

Also they had had 5 children 3 living by 1911.

I see you were querying Alexander before:

Still didn't find a marriage tho and Martha's family changed their name to Bunn eventually.

I suspect then that they never married.
With that out of the way LOL! will see what else we can come up with.

Thanks for this & I apologise as I knew the name had changed around 1881.We still have Bunns in the family although they are as wise as me on this.
I appreciate you giving me baptism details which I didn't have & also I didn't know there had been 5 children.
All I know is that William who was Martha's son was missing presumed dead in WW1.

Not come across this one before but looking at the witnesses there is a Neale slight connection:
                      This is how it works:

Martha S.E.E Bunn/Bone mother was Esther Hannah Scott

Esther had a sister Maria b.1827 Briston who married a Jeremiah Neale b.1822 Foxley.

                      What do you think?

I have come across this one before but with the name Mary Jermany.
Nothing further than the fact that Banningham is nearer to Suffield & Stody.
These places seem to all be quite near as where Esther (Martha,s mother) & her siblings were born
was Holt Road Briston & that is also near.

Just done a check on the marriage of Esther Scotts sister Maria to Jeremiah Neale in 1854
On Family Search(LDS) the name is Meale not Neale & they have Maria down as Mary!!
This is an error as there was a sister Mary b.1828 but she married a Joseph Jordan in 1853.

Can't help with your specific query Betty, but just wanted to add that whilst researching Norfolk records over the years, I've had similar problems with some surnames. I've had Meale/Neale (and variants) confusion, Olley and Ollet(t) and also read articles about the Jermery family.
Have you managed to look through the actual images of Norfolk PR on family search? Sometimes that helps iron out transcription problems - some of the old writing was appalling!

I have been looking through the parish records for Suffield for baptisms hoping to find brothers and sisters of John with parents Thomas and Mary and hoping for a surname for Mary.
There are parish records for Amy bap 24 March 1776, John 5th April 1775, - Haven't seen a burial for this yet.
The registers then are unreadable until 1794. So the others - Ann 3 March 1782 and John 19 June 1785 are AT's.

Edit: John Olley infant burial 29 Nov 1780

I've had Meale/Neale (and variants) confusion, Olley and Ollet(t) and also read articles about the Jermery family.
Have you managed to look through the actual images of Norfolk PR on family search? Sometimes that helps iron out transcription problems - some of the old writing was appalling!

Agree with you there Jay! Most of mine are Norfolk too. However it is a great resource. I wish Suffolk would follow suit.

Maybe the namewas changed as you suggest .I have just looked at my tree & having recognised the name Palmer Meale I think that was a family name.
When they had children 3 the 1st one was Palmer W.Meale b.1845,Mary Ann b.1849,& Miriam b.1850
Mary Ann Scott who married Jeremiah 1844 died in 1854

Jeremiah got married to Maria Scott apparently not long after Mary Ann died & they had a further 7 children

                                    *Salathiel 1851-1956,Josiah 1856-1948,Terah James 1858-1952,Palmer 1860,Luther J c.1862,Heber c 1864,Charles 1867

                                    * I do wonder about Salathiel as to him maybe the son of Mary Ann rather than Maria or if Jeremiah may have fathered him at a date before they could marry.

Jeremiah Meale died in 1891 & had become quite well off in business.
