  • Decourseys - Loose Ends!

    Hi all,

Posted a while ago asking for help tracing the Decoursey family of Poplar in the 1870s. I have a few loose ends that I cannot tie up. My great-great-great-grandfather Patrick Decoursey had 5 children - Dennis in 1870, Mary (circa 1871), Ellen in 1873, Kate in 1875 and Patrick in 1879. Though I have successfully traced births of 4 of the children, I cannot find a birth record for Mary, who will be born in either late 1870 or 1871 to match with census dates. The mother's maiden name will be Holland.

I have successfully found death records for Ellen and Patrick, but I cannot find any death records for Dennis, Mary and Kate. I know that Kate married Walter Cain in 1892, and was still married to him and living in Poplar in 1939. She may have been using the name Catherine when she died.

On the 1911 census, Patrick Decoursey Snr. is listed as being married for 12 years. However, his first wife Catherine Holland died in 1875, and his second wife Jane Johnson died in 1889. Can anyone find a remarriage for him?

Would really appreciate any help, as having such great difficulty.

    Kind regards

Mary born 70 / 71 could be registered as Polly as she was named as such in a census. Forget which one but she was Mary in the other one.

Patrick did indeed marry Jane Johnson in 1877. Not sure if Ann De Courcy is the right one though.

                          Could Hall be Holland?

Dennis was born Q4 1870 and Ann is Q2 1871... would she have had another baby so quickly? And if Ann, why Mary on the censuses?

Probably not. In 1881 10 year old Ann Decourcey, born in Bow, was living with parents James and Mary in Spitalfields and there was a marriage of James Decorsey to Mary HALL in Shoreditch in 1860.
