On 11th May 1899 William Aspen was admitted to Liverpool Rd Workhouse Islington lunatic ward as a Police case. He eventually was admitted to Cane Hill Asylum in July 1899 where he died in 1918.

Is there any way I can find out why he was admitted?

Have you got his death certificate? That would give you the cause of death, and probably explain why he was in the Asylum

I sent to the LMA for my Great Grandfathers, full records, wonder if they hold more than is available online.

I had a quick look in the online newspapers for Aspen (William then Sarah) in 1899 but didn't come up with anything, unfortunately.
