  • James Pearson Born Sheffield around 1807-1809 My Brickwall

Hi, I am tracing my ancestor James Pearson, a cutler who lived in Norwich (D 1859 aged 52 according to death cert.) I have his marriage to Margaret Ann Able in Norwich 1837, where James' father is stated as John Pearson, cutler. The 1851 census says James was born in Sheffield. My challenge is finding the correct father and mother of James. Am looking for a John Pearson, a cutler, in Sheffield, who had a son James there around 1807-09. Seem to be a few possibilities but the key word is "cutler".... any advice much appreciated how I can connect James to his parents John and ?? unknown mother. have tried probates, parish records and cutler lists of Sheffield to no avail.... Cheers and thanks

Thanks Val. That James is certainly possible, Betty being Elizabeth Woodhouse. I'd come across this record before- although there remain several other likely candidates. I guess the fun is finding some link outside of the parish records- like a will, or an apprenticeship record or something mentioning "cutler"...otherwise it seems a guessing game. Most public family trees on commercial sites have opted for James being son of this John/Betty you mentioned but some list a James born to John/Mary Palmer equally likely.... (born Almondbury 03 Dec 1808) and today I found a James Pearson born Lightcliffe 24 May 1807 to John Pearson (mother not listed).... cheers

        Hi Stevie,

no easy fix I'm afraid, it will be a matter of tracing him forwards and or his children [might have his fathers name?] ah I see that he died early on. it'd be a case of listing all the probables and systematically tracking all of them and going from the findings that arise.

Yes, that is "my" James- he died in 1859 in Norwich, and the family you have from the 1841 and 1851 censuses is the correct one. So, of James in his Norwich life, I have plenty of info after 1837- his marriage, his census returns, his death details, his profession of cutler. The brickwall for me is proving a link back to his correct parents in Sheffield. James' marriage cert. to Margaret Able gives his father as "John Pearson, cutler"- and the 1851 census for James gives his birthplace as Sheffield. So, taking those together, have been looking for a James Pearson, born Sheffield 1807-9 to a father John Pearson, also a cutler....the problem being there are quite a few "James" Pearsons born to a father John Pearson in Sheffield area.... but I like the idea suggested above of looking for various burials for the father to see if any place names crop up. Also have just found a possible probate record for a John Pearson died 7 Jun 1857, proven in Wakefield in 03 Jun 1858 with one of the executors listed as a table blade forger (Thomas Harrison)...might be worth the gamble to order....thanks everyone for your help
