  • Searching for Etsuko...

    Hi all,

if anyone knows something about this please reply!!! It's been an year since I'm trying to find some infos but it seems like the infos completely disappeared from reality!

The person I'm tryingto find some infos about is my great great grandmother who came from Japan and married my great great grandad Giuseppe (born in 1858) who was a merchant navy captain.

Her name was Etsuko Matsumoto, she was born in 1861 (or so it seems) in Urasoe (Okinawa) but lived in Naha.
Her dad was a government official and her mother was an housewife.
I don't know if she had any siblings.
She married Giuseppe, from Italy, and came to live here where she took the name of Rosa.
She had two sons: Antonio (1888) and Francesco (1895).

I'd like to know something about her background and if there's still some relative alive.

    Thank you very much!!!!

I also have a pic if it could be helpful!

Family search has some information about Japanese genealogy and records. Otherwise I don't ha ve a clue, I'm afraid. The language is going to be a BIG problem I expect. I think you will need a specialist website for this search.

            Try these pages:

Guide to Japan ancestry, family history and genealogy: parish registers, transcripts, census records, birth records, marriage records, and death records.

(UPDATE: Sorry, I see that OC had already pointed you there.)

And of course our own page - there may well be some duplication of links with familysearch:

Some of the pages will have a translation button or link to click on.

E.g. http://www.archives.go.jp - click where it says English

Have you looked for the records about her in Italy? For instance - have you looked for an obituary or burial records or death certificate? Have you pulled the birth certificates or baptismal records for her children? Naturalization records or Italian census records? Passport?

Have you contacted other descendants to see if they have family records?

                      Of course I have.
That's why I'm trying to find something on the net.
Nobody did find something about her apart from some photos. The problem is she lived in the south of Italy, where things aren't quite organized as it should be ( I mean also in public offices).

But it wasn't evident from any of your posts, which is why you were asked.

One other resource from familysearch's wiki is their "individual help" page. They point out that you may walk into a Family History Centre (which I doubt can provide much additional help unless you visit one in Japan), but also their online community thru facebook:

The LDS Church has had missions in Japan for some time, so they probably have help available. There's a book about longevity in Okinawa which indicated their records are pretty much intact, so you may have good luck finding the records you seek.

Have you found this website? You might want to buy their book - and maybe you can find a guru there to answer your questions:
