  • Missing Marriage

Browsing the Newspaper Archives the other day I came across the notice of marriage between John Newman and Sarah Attewell. The Newspaper (Oxford Chronicle and Reading Gazette) was dated 6 June 1840 and stated that the marriage had been in St Ebbe's church on Thursday last, performed by the Rev. Mr Churton. Yippee, I thought as Sarah had previously vanished off the face of the earth, and now I had found her.

However, try as I may I can find no trace of the marriage in either the GRO index, or in the church registers, now on Ancestry. Can anyone find any other trace of this elusive event? John and Sarah went on to have 10 children so they definitely were married!

How strange - yes that is them, as it is the correct fathers and occupation for John Newman. So it was reported in the paper almost 3 years before the actual event, which took place in a different church. Weird. Thank you for finding them, I obviously didn't look far ahead enough, or for alternate spellings.

Daft suggestion, but could the date of the newspaper be wrongly transcribed?

However, I did once hear about someone's mother, unable to bear the shame of her daughter living in sin, who put a false marriage announcement in the local paper, hahaha.

I had the same thought OC, but it is correct, printed on the page. Another one of life's little mysteries!
