  • emily hewson and katherine wilce

i'm really stuck on these two and their children, any help is massively and gratefully received!

one child of the marriage according to GRO index:
maud emily shaw b.1897, wandsworth MN: hewson

i can't see emily hewson or her daughter maud in the 1901/1911 censuses, or death regs?
here is an older thread about emily, with images of her addresses in 1899 (living wandsworth) and 1901 (living southampton) when her husband octavius twice signed up for the boer war, explaining his absence from the 1901 census.

    KATHERINE WILCE/WILES

listed as katherine wilce and wild in the marriage index. looks like wiles or wilce on the marriage.
married 20 jun 1904, bletchley, bucks

    2) twins: charles neville and kathleen hilda b.1910, st giles, london. MN wilce
can't locate at all asides from this.

can't find any info on katherine asides from marriage, or her children in the 1911 census. octavius was a steward in the merchant navy, and was in ill in west canada in 1914/5 according to the ship logs. the ship was on route to england from antofogasta, chile when he died in 1915.

Thanks val, i have his service records, but not the passport application, interesting.

Bc, cheers. Don't know why i couldn't spot those. The 1911 was taken on 2 apr, so i should be able to find kathleen? The one i didn't look for.

I see that Gordon Pembroke Shaw was also a seaman.

On ancestry - UK Incoming Passenger List
                14 September 1920
He is coming from Valpaiso, Chile.
Gordon appears to be part of the crew - OS, age 15 years.

Is it worth going out on a limb, and looking at Chile ?

The other thought I had was, if he was an orphan, would he have been placed in an orphanage or training school for the navy?

                  Thanks val, interesting read.

Bc, i know they took them young in the navy, so not surprised. But, was he orphaned? I can't locate either wife in a later census. There was a possibility for emily with an adopted child, but not concrete. And why can't locate octavius' children in a census? Maud should be in 1901, and gordon and kathleen should be somewhere in 1911?

                    Hi Kyle,

On the UK Incoming Passengers List, Gordon gives a London address.

Did you know that Octavius had a Freeman Record on ancestry ?

Sorry, I meant Freemason record. I found it on ancestry.

He had been mistranscribed as Octavius Pombrook Shaw!

Seems like octavius' wives and brothers weren't close. That's his brother james enquiring. One of the brothers lived here, and octavius had come out at one stage.
