  • Can you find birth Margaret please?

Sorry this is a bit long but had to paint the picture.

Margaret Pennington was born 19/10/1912 but I have been unable to find a record of her birth.
She is on the 1939 register [wrongly transcribed as Rennington] living with her grandmother Caroline Bentley Humphriss, 11 Briar Drive , Huyton. In 1939, her mother Lilian was in hospital in Liverpool, died 1940 and William was in Grimsby [Manager Mineral Waters Factory] but died Liverpool in the 1960's

Her parents married Stoke upon Trent in 1910 - William Henry Pennington and Lilian Humphriss.
Lilian is with her parents on the 1911 census living 8 East View Hanley Stoke-On-Trent married but without husband William who I am unable to find on the 1911 census.

William Henry was an Engineer with his father's Mineral Water business b 1888 Hanley, Stoke upon Trent.
William, Lilian and Margaret left England for Calcutta and then Madras on 5th Jan 1922. Margaret would have been 9 1/4 - age given as 10.
William returned to England 9 July 1922 to Hanley.
Lilian, Margaret and new baby Joan [b early 1925 St Thomas Mount, Madras. British India Office Births & Baptisms ] returned to Hanley, England arr 9 July 1925. Margaret therefore age 12 3/4 but age given as 11.

    My queries are:
    1) When was Margaret born and where.
    2) Where was William Henry on 1911 census.
    3) Did WH return to India before 1925 when his daughter was born.

Been looking for these for several years now.
Thanks for any help on these.
    Kat

How do you know she was born 19-10-1912?

If only from the 1939 Register, are you certain that this date is accurate?

Have you searched a couple of years each side of 1912, or under her mother's maiden name?

        Sorry-got delayed- visitors.

        Val:

We did consider that one but unable to find her on the 1911 census.
        Plus:
Left England for Madras on 5th Jan 1922. Margaret age given as 10.
Returned home to Hanley, England arr 9 July 1925. Margaret 11(?)
If she had been b march qtr 1910 she would have been 15?
        It doesn't add up.
        Sylvia:
birth date from only the 1939 reg, yes. She was in the ATS and as far as we know she never married so nothing else to go on..
Searched either side of 1912? -yes of course!! right up to 1915. Every Hump* I could find and all combinations of Pennington. Even searched for just Margaret in case the name was really mangled - we have been searching for a long time. I cannot find a baptism either.

It is also strange that there are no other children between Margaret b 1912 and Joan b 1925 - that's a long interval.

Ahem, I wonder if her age was fudged for the journeys because the fare was cheaper the younger you were?

I don't 'know' the poster but we contacted her and she knows no more than we do. Same with the leads from tribal pages although the 'locked' one did not reply. :(

LOL OC. Well you could be right. But if anyone can find her on the 1911 census I will buy the certificate and thank you.
Bit of an insult to be told to look 11 when you are 15!! I'd be in a sulk all voyage.

In 1925 most 15 year olds were still girls rather than young women and dressed as such.

We have his 1906 attestation from FMP but it only gives his two sisters as NOK - both married by then - no other information. Don't know why he didn't give his parents.
I think there was a Chelsea Pensioner record on Fold 3 - is that the one you mean? we don't have Fold 3.
                        Thanks for looking Val.

Edit: Cannot see any Army records for her on FMP, Val.

                        Thanks for looking Julie.
