  • War Heroes.....

War Heroes or maybe not quite.

I have researched three soldiers this year in a bit more detail and it seems that my boys were not the luckiest of war Heroes.

John Edwin Barnes (my great grandfather) died on the very first day of the ill fated Gallipoli campaign so only lasted one day.

His brother in law John Daniels was captured four days after his division landed in France on 27.8.14 and spent the entire war as a POW.

John's younger brother William Daniels it turns out was a deserter ( see my other thread)

Didn't have much luck did they.

My family story was that my grandfather was injured four days into WW1, captured and spent the rest of the war in a prisoner of war camp. His distraught mother died of a broken heart when he failed to return home in 1918.

There is nothing like a bit of research.....he was indeed injured, but four days after he was sent to France in 1917! As he was an Officer, he was taken to the German Officers hospital and they saved his leg. He returned home in early 1918 and was the informant, present at the death of his mother in 1919. She died of flu! Not sure where my family got their story from, because he never talked about the war.

Sometimes the truth can get in the way of a good story.
